First, the sheetrock, mudding and taping are completed. Then, you can either use a trowel or a sprayer to apply a joint compound that has been watered down to a saucy consistency. Soon after you will notice small stalactites dangling from the ceiling. After it dries a bit, you then take your trowel and run it over the stalactites to produce a mottled look. After it completely dries, you can then paint it. This is probably the messiest of the three options discussed here. Textured Spray or roll on a popcorn textured ceiling. The popcorn textured ceilings can be applied easily and fast and does a good job of covering poorly taped drywall joints and thickness variations. Flat Sometimes a simple finish with crown molding looks the best. Just apply paint for a flat smooth look.
